We provide personalised support based on individual needs, following Universal Design in Education principles. This includes flexible learning arrangements, assistive technologies, alternative assessment methods, accessible learning materials, and specialised staff support. Our approach covers physical, sensory, neurological, psychiatric, and learning disabilities, with dedicated staff working closely with each student from enrolment to ensure the right support is in place from day one.
Our pathway to achieving equity
At Skills Institute, we believe that "our goal is to grow people" – and that includes every person, regardless of ability. Our Disability Action Plan, launched in 2023, represents our commitment to creating truly inclusive education where students with disabilities can thrive alongside their peers. Guided by the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Kia Ōrite Toolkit, our comprehensive plan addresses five key areas: learner support, accessible delivery methods, staff capability building, inclusive policies, and strong governance oversight. Comprehensive support for every learning style
Accessible and inclusive learning environments
Our facilities meet NZQA building requirements and are regularly audited for accessibility compliance. We provide culturally inclusive spaces, emergency evacuation plans tailored for disabled students, and digital learning platforms with accessibility features like colour filters, font changes, and text-to-speech capabilities. Each campus has designated spaces where students can connect with peers, fostering a supportive learning community that celebrates diversity.
Three-year strategy for lasting change
Our Disability Action Plan is a comprehensive three-year strategy (2023-2026) designed to remove barriers and create equitable learning opportunities. The plan covers five key workstreams: learner support, accessible programme delivery, staff training, inclusive policies, and governance oversight. Built on the foundation that disability is created by societal barriers, not individual limitations, our plan focuses on creating environments where all students can succeed.
