Hospitality Course FAQs

Your questions about launching a rewarding career in New Zealand's vibrant food and beverage industry, answered.

What hospitality courses do you offer?

We offer two levels of hospitality training delivered on campus in Auckland: Level 3 (25 weeks) provides foundational skills including bartending and barista training in authentic restaurant, café, bar and event environments; Level 4 (20 weeks) focuses on hospitality management and supervisory skills, including LCQ (Licence Controller Qualification) training. Both result in NZQA-approved qualifications.

Are hospitality courses available online or work-based?

Our hospitality courses are delivered exclusively on campus to ensure you get hands-on experience in real-world environments. You'll train in our onsite café 'Study Break', fully equipped training bar, and professional barista stations using industry-standard equipment. This practical approach ensures you graduate job-ready with genuine hospitality skills employers are seeking.

How long does it take to complete a hospitality course?

Level 3 takes 25 weeks and provides foundational skills including bartending and barista training in authentic restaurant, café, bar and event environments. Level 4 takes 20 weeks and focuses on hospitality management and supervisory skills, including LCQ (Licence Controller Qualification) training. Both result in NZQA-approved qualifications.

Who can enrol in hospitality courses?

Level 3 is open to students aged 16+ (18+ for international students) who enjoy connecting with others and want to build a career in hospitality. No prior experience is required. Level 4 is designed for hospitality workers wanting to step up to leadership roles, whether you're currently working in the industry or have completed Level 3.

What practical training will I receive?

Level 3 graduates receive the New Zealand Certificate in Hospitality Level 3. Level 4 graduates receive the New Zealand Certificate in Food and Beverage Service Level 4 with Restaurant Services strand, plus the essential LCQ (Licence Controller Qualification) needed for supervisory roles in licensed premises.

What career opportunities are available in hospitality?

New Zealand's hospitality industry generated $15.7 billion in sales in 2024 and employs 145,000 people, making it the country's 7th largest employer with 7.3% employment growth. There are acute shortages in senior roles, particularly restaurant managers and supervisors, creating unprecedented opportunities for qualified graduates. Career paths include supervisor, duty manager, restaurant manager, and event coordinator roles.

Why is there high demand for hospitality professionals?

Hospitality course enrolments have dropped 73% since 2015, while food and beverage service training fell 76%, creating critical skill shortages. Despite this, the industry continues growing, with over 2,200 hospitality positions available nationwide. This means excellent job prospects and competitive salaries for qualified graduates.

What makes someone successful in hospitality?

Outstanding hospitality professionals combine technical expertise with exceptional people skills. They excel at multitasking under pressure, maintain high standards, and have deep knowledge of food, beverage and service operations. Most importantly, they genuinely enjoy making people's day special and creating memorable experiences.

Will you help me find work after graduation?

Absolutely. Our tutors are hospitality experts with extensive industry experience and employer networks who can assist with job placement opportunities. We also focus on developing the customer service abilities and real hospitality skills that New Zealand employers are actively seeking in the current competitive market.
