Hairdressing FAQs

Whether you're just starting out or looking to advance your career, we've answered the most common questions about our hairdressing courses to help you get going with confidence.

What qualifications do I need to start a hairdressing course?

For our Level 3 foundation course, you need NCEA Level 1 with literacy and numeracy, or equivalent. Our Level 4 Professional Stylist course requires completion of Level 3 hairdressing or equivalent qualification. Our advisors will help you find the right entry point for your background.

Can I work while studying hairdressing?

Yes! Many of our hairdressing courses are designed to be flexible, allowing you to gain hands-on experience in salons while you study. We offer campus-based learning in Auckland and Lower Hutt, plus work-based training options to fit around your commitments.

Are there online learning options available?

All students access our Pivot Point LAB online platform featuring interactive lessons, video demonstrations and assessment tools available 24/7. This complements your practical campus or workplace training rather than replacing hands-on salon experience.

How long does it take to complete a hairdressing course?

Our Level 3 foundation course takes 40 weeks full-time, while the Level 4 Professional Stylist programme is 20 weeks full-time. Flexible and work-based study options are available to extend these timeframes if needed.

Will I receive a recognised qualification?

Absolutely. All our hairdressing courses lead to NZQA-approved New Zealand Certificates in Hairdressing that are recognised by salon owners throughout New Zealand and internationally. These qualifications also provide pathways to salon management and further specialisation.
