Questions
International Student FAQs
Which Skills Institute courses are available to international students?
How do I choose the right course?
Consider your previous qualifications, work experience, English-language level and career goals. Each course page explains the programme level, duration, entry requirements, course content and potential career pathways.
If you are unsure which programme is suitable for you, our International Team or one of our approved education agents can help you explore your options.
What are the entry requirements?
Entry requirements vary between programmes. Depending on the course, you may need to provide evidence of:
Previous academic study Relevant qualifications or work experience English-language proficiency Your age and identity Your ability to meet any practical or placement requirements
Please check the entry requirements on the relevant course page before submitting your application.
What level of English do I need?
English-language requirements depend on the level and type of programme. You may need to provide an approved English-language test result, such as IELTS Academic, or other evidence accepted under NZQA requirements.
Check the individual course page for the English-language requirements that apply to your chosen programme.
What documents do I need when I apply?
You will normally need to provide:
A certified copy of your passport Certified copies of your academic qualifications and results A certified copy of your English-language test results Evidence of relevant work experience, if required Certified English translations of documents that are not in English
Additional documents may be required depending on your chosen programme and personal circumstances.
What happens after I submit my application?
We will review your application and supporting documents. We may contact you if we require additional information. If your application is approved, you will receive an Offer of Place explaining your programme, fees, study dates and any conditions you need to meet. You can then use your Offer of Place as part of your student visa application.
Do I need a student visa?
Most international students planning to study in New Zealand for more than three months need an appropriate student visa. You will normally need an Offer of Place from an approved education provider before your visa can be granted. Check the current requirements on the Immigration New Zealand website.
When should I apply for my visa?
Apply as early as possible after receiving your Offer of Place and preparing your supporting documents. Immigration New Zealand strongly encourages international students to apply approximately three months before their intended travel date. Processing times can change and may be longer during busy periods.
What types of accommodation are available in New Zealand?
Common accommodation options for international students include:
- Homestay with a New Zealand family
- A room in a shared flat or house
- A private rental
- Purpose-built student accommodation
- Temporary accommodation while you find a longer-term home
Availability and costs depend on the city, suburb, room type, meals, furnishings and included utilities.
Do I need medical and travel insurance?
Yes. International students must have appropriate medical and travel insurance that meets the requirements of their education provider and covers the relevant period of study in New Zealand. Skills Institute will confirm the insurance requirements and whether insurance is arranged as part of your enrolment.
Who should I contact if I need help?
Contact the Skills Institute International Team if you need help with your application, enrolment, programme information or settling into study. For visa decisions and current immigration requirements, contact Immigration New Zealand or a licensed immigration adviser.
