Turn your experience into a qualification

Your years of hairdressing experience is valuable. The Professional Skills Recognition (PSR) pathway from Skills Institute is a formal assessment process that acknowledges your existing skills gained through industry experience.

Who can enrol?

The PSR pathway is designed for experienced hairdressing professionals with a minimum of 5 years full-time equivalent industry experience, whether gained in New Zealand or abroad.

You must be currently employed in the hairdressing industry in New Zealand for at least 20 hours per week, demonstrating ongoing practical application of your skills. If you're not a New Zealand citizen or resident, your visa must remain valid for the entire duration of the pathway (typically 4-6 months).

This pathway recognizes that professional excellence can be developed anywhere in the world and provides a streamlined route to formal New Zealand qualification for practitioners who are actively contributing to our local hairdressing industry.

Why choose this option?

  • Fast-track your qualification: no classroom attendance required and can be completed in 4-6 months instead of 1-2.5 years.
  • Professional credibility: validate your professional expertise with a nationally recognised certificate.
  • Career advancement: open doors to better opportunities, including salon ownership or education roles.
  • Increased earning potential: qualified stylists command higher salaries.
  • Apprenticeship support: train apprentices and share your expertise with confidence.

How it works

  • Initial Application - NZ$200 (incl. GST)
    • Submit evidence demonstrating you meet entry requirements
  • Full Assessment - NZ$1,300 (incl. GST)
    • Once your eligibility is confirmed, complete the comprehensive assessment.
  • Practical Assessment
    • One day (6-8 hours) of observed practical services.

What qualification will you gain?

Upon successful completion, you'll earn the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Professional Stylist) Level 4 - the exact same nationally recognized qualification awarded to students who complete the full programme.

Industry information

Industry standards are rising

The New Zealand hairdressing industry is experiencing significant transformation. Salons are increasingly seeking qualified professionals who can demonstrate verified competency, not just years of experience. Formal qualifications have become essential for career progression, with many leadership and specialist roles now requiring Level 4 certification as a minimum standard.

Meeting workforce development needs

New Zealand faces a critical shortage of qualified hairdressing professionals, particularly those eligible to train and mentor apprentices. The PSR pathway directly addresses this gap by enabling experienced practitioners to gain the credentials needed to support the next generation of hairdressers.

International recognition

For hairdressers who trained overseas, New Zealand's qualification framework provides a standardised benchmark that validates your skills within the local market. The Level 4 certificate demonstrates to employers, clients and regulatory bodies that your competencies meet New Zealand industry standards, regardless of where you developed your expertise.

Economic opportunity

Qualified hairdressers earn significantly more than their unqualified counterparts. Research shows that formal certification correlates with increased earning potential, improved employment opportunities and greater job security. For salon owners, having qualified staff enhances business credibility, attracts premium clientele and opens doors to industry partnerships and training provider status.

Future-proofing your career

As the industry evolves with new technologies, products and techniques, formal qualifications provide a foundation for ongoing professional development. The Level 4 certificate creates pathways to higher-level qualifications, specialist certifications and diverse career opportunities including education, product development, and salon consultancy.
