From Passion to Purpose: Learners Finding their path in Nail Technology

Beauty has always been a calling for Shyla, Reyana & Taleisha. Enrolled in Skills Institute's Nail Technology Level 4 programme in Dunedin, these three ākonga are turning passion into career-ready skills — and they're only just getting started.

Dunedin Nail Learners-stories

For Shyla, Reyana and Taleisha, their interest in beauty has always been more than a hobby — it's been a calling. Now enrolled in Skills Institute's Nail Technology Level 4 programme at the Dunedin campus, these three learners are turning creative passion into real, career-ready skills.

Shyla White, 20

Fresh out of Otago Girls' High School, Shyla always knew she wanted to channel her love of beauty and creativity into something meaningful. "I wanted to see it as a skill, something I could actually build a future on," she says. At 20, she's already well on her way. The programme has given Shyla the freedom to explore her creativity while developing hands-on expertise she never expected to gain so quickly.

Reyana Barringer-Tairi, 26

Reyana came to Skills Institute through MSD, and it didn't take long for her to realise she'd found her place. As a mum who attended Taieri College, she was looking for a pathway that worked around real life and she found it. "The school gives you options," she says. "You can balance study with work and family." For Reyana, this course is about building her future and something she can call her own.

Taleisha Mika-Williams, 25

Also a mum and a Taieri College alumna, Taleisha discovered the programme through Facebook and knew straight away it aligned with where she wanted to go. Like her fellow learnersshe's been surprised by just how much she's learned — far beyond what she expected walking in the door.

All three learners speak about the depth of what they've gained. From cuticle care and polygel application to understanding the full range of nail systems and learning to use professional tools correctly, the technical knowledge has been substantial. But it's the confidence that's stood out most.

"We've gained more than we expected," they reflect. "And we've learned how to balance study with life with work, family, everything."

Their goals are clear and grounded: keep improving, stay consistent, and eventually build home-based nail businesses of their own. They're already planning the next steps — building skills further, picking up part-time work, and steadily transitioning into self-employment.

"What success looks like to us," they share, "is creating a balanced life while doing something we love — and feeling confident in our abilities."

Their advice? Simple. "If you're thinking about it — go for it. You'll learn more than you expect and gain skills that set you up for your future."

Shyla, Reyana, and Taleisha are exactly the kind of ākonga that make Skills Institute proud — whānau who show up, work hard, and have the courage to back themselves. We can't wait to see where their mahi takes them!
